- Article Title: What is weighing on Samsung?

S: Interesting Jaeyong apologized soon after this article was released

J: Maybe TE knew it in advance?

S: What do you think of his decision?

E: It was a good decision, but still there will be some side effects, as succession methods like BW is not quite desirable.

S: Is this a milestone for the company? What can we expect hereafter?

E: What happened seems natural, (and for investors) nothing will change because of the apology per se. The Lee family may cut down their shares, but in foreign, western investors won’t pay too much attention because they think the family’s share isn’t a considerable sum.

For example, Jonggeundang had this owner(or his son) risk(DUI) but some investors may not care so much, as they are likely to say “Oh well they merely own 2%”. So, no need to focus on the short term or pay too much attention to such events.

J: I see this as a transition period for Samsung. One positive side would be that shareholders may expect more transparency (with the hermit heir apologizing and promising change) and more ‘sound and healthy’ corporate governance. The announcement looks pretentious, for such shows are often misused in Korea, but at least Lee tried.

TE: But when a decision is made at the top, they line up quickly. This helps some of Samsung’s bold and strategic bets to pay off. Others, like Samsung cars and solar panels, don’t have one.

J: Samsung’s decision making process(chaebol-led), in some aspects, paid off in semi-conductor business, but hard to say it always worked.

S: traders and brokers I met track global news on a daily basis and they seem to make moves when they hear something important.

J: Thay may be the case for fund managers, as I know some working in the field, yet they have the incentive to trade just for the sake of making transactions. I think they get paid commission per transaction and sometimes that’s what lead them to focus on frequent short term trades
